These are pieces of processed bismuth. Bismuth is a naturally occurring element on the periodic table that is found as a light silver looking metallic ore. When bismuth is melted and cooled, allowing it to crystalize, it form its iconic stair-step like structure. The colors come from a reaction with the oxygen in the air as it is cooling.
