This pink mineral forms in cavities and fractures of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. It can also be found in bedded marine deposits. Rhodochrosite can precipitate from hot springs, form from organic matter degradation, or processes in which hydrothermal fluids rise and fill cavities in metamorphic rocks.
Rhodochrosite forms rhombohedral and scalenohedral crystals, both of which cleave with three-directional rhombohedral cleavage. This mineral is also recognized as one of the national symbols of Argentina and the state of Colorado.
