Also known as Menoceras arikarense, this male rhinoceros skull features an exquisitely preserved set of teeth, including 16 upper, 12 lower, and two incisor tusks.
This extinct, small rhinocerotid was endemic to most of southern North America during the Miocene epoch. The full set of teeth displayed in this fossilized skull supported an herbaceous diet for this grazing animal. This skull features paired knob-like horns that were only found in male Menoceras.
These rhinocerotids were significantly smaller than the modern rhinoceros, comparable in size to a pig or sheep, measuring about 5ft long. Fossils of Menoceras are often found in large accumulations, suggesting that they lived in herds.
