Selenite forms when saline water, rich in calcium and sulfate, evaporates, causing the mineral gypsum to crystallize. The name "selenite" comes from the Greek goddess of the moon, Selene, and literally means "moonstone". It was given to the mineral because of its pale, moon-like glow and pearly luster, which resembles moonlight.
Selenite ranks a 2 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making it a very soft mineral. Because of its low hardness, selenite is fragile and can scratch or break easily, requiring careful handling. Additionally, this mineral is water-soluble, meaning exposure will cause it to dissolve and lose luster.
Selenite wand is widely used for cleansing other crystals, clearing negative energy from a space or aura, and promoting calm and balance during meditation.
