Amethyst clusters form when silica-rich fluids, containing dissolved iron, flow into cavities or fissures in rocks. As these fluids cool over millions of years, minerals crystallize and grow into pyramidal-shaped crystals on the cavity walls, with the final cluster forming as a mass of these crystals.
The characteristic purple is due to a combination of iron impurities within the crystal structure and exposure to natural radiation from the surrounding rock. This natural radiation alters the iron atoms, changing their valence state and causing the crystal to absorb specific wavelengths of light, resulting in the purple color.
Amethyst is associated with enhancement of spiritual awareness, promotion of sobriety, calm and clarity. It is strongly linked to the Crown Chakra, aiding in spiritual connection and higher consciousness.
