This is a fossilized bison jaw unearthed in Nishnabotna River, Iowa, USA. This bison lived during the Pleistocene Epoch, somewhere between 2.6 million and 11,700 years ago.The fossil is in good condition, with most of the teeth present. Scientists once believed that bison migrated to North America a few million years ago across the Bering Strait, but a recent discovery in Nishnabotna has revealed that all ancient North American bison were related to a single ancestor that is thought to have migrated closer to 200,000 years ago, placing the age of this fossil sometime after that.
