These decorative plates feature and ammonite in matrix. Every plate has an ammonite in the swirl on top and you can even see some additional ones on the plate itself sometimes.
Ammonites get their name from Piny the Elder who used to say that they were "the horns of Ammon". Ammon was an Egyptian god who had rams horns.
