This is a pink apatite thumbnail specimen from La Marina Mine, Boyaca, Colombia.

Apatite is a relatively common mineral that is composed of calcium phosphate with fluorine, chlorine and several other elements. Apatite is one of the very few minerals that is produced and used by organic biological systems. Hydroxyapatite is the major component of tooth enamel and bone minerals. It is sometimes used as a gemstone, and it can occur in a wide variety of colors.

Moon rocks collected during the Apollo programs contained traces of apatite, and later studies found that water trapped in the mineral meant that there is much more liquid water on the moon than previously thought.

This specimen is approximately 1.3cm x .6cm x .7cm. You will receive a complimentary 'perky' display box and a label which features the name of the mineral and the locale where it was mined.
