This is a thumbnail specimen of a terminated amethyst from Brandberg, Namibia. This region is known for high-quality specimens, and this is a miniature version of the beautiful crystals that come from this locale. The terminated tip has a translucent light purple coloration that changes to a clear quartz on the body of the crystal. Amethyst is a form of quartz that gets its color from naturally irradiated iron ions, and has been a valued gem for decoration and collection since prehistoric times.
