This is am amazing Tazanite thumbnail from the Merlani Hills in Arusha, Tazania. This one displays the pleochroic effect where it has a distinct "blue" or "purple" color depending on which way you view it from. When back lit with polarized light, a really unique green and teal section appear when you hold it one way and a distinct purple and red zoning. That's blue, purple, green, teal, and red in all!! It also has some really nice clear sections! You can even see the plastic clasp of the thumbnail box through the middle in one of the pictures. Tanzanite is the blue and violet variety of zoisite and only comes out of one region in Tanzania, the Merlani Hills and has a hardness of 6.5. It is very desirable to work with for jewelry, as the facets can be made to bring out different colors.
